Bye, Bye, Cupcakes?

Across the nation we are seeing healthier options in restaurants worldwide, lunches in our school cafeterias are getting healthier, and they are attempting the banning of trans-fats in NYC . This is great for the majority and instills a health conscious society.
Sounds all "fine-and-dandy," right? Consider this: people are getting thrown out of school for bringing birthday pizzas to class instead of carrots, and cupcakes are being banned.
A Texas Legislature last year passed the so-called Safe Cupcake amendment, which guarantees parents' right to deliver unhealthful treats to the classroom - such as sweetheart candies on Valentine's Day and candy corn on Halloween.
My philosophy is that of "everything in moderation." Key nutritional advise is on the addition of healthy whole foods, closest to their natural state, and not that of elimination. Enjoy your food, stay active, and "exercise" personal responsibility.
For, in reality, you are the one putting the food in your mouth, you make the choice, but if the choice isn't there...that is elimination, deprivation, and control.
As far as school's responsibility goes, I like the addition of healthy options. Realistically, children are there about 35 hours a week and home 63 waking hours each week (providing they are allowed 10 hours of sleep). It is the parent's responsibility to use that time to instill healthy lifestyle choices, stock their kitchens accordingly, and lead by example.

I totally agree about "personal responsibility" and not eliminating and setting everyone up for depreviation. We have to learn HOW to eat in moderation, not avoid, and eliminate. I also agree that it's a great thing that school are on board with the healthy eating concept. A concept that seems to be so foreign to most school and unfortunately to most kids. Great info--love this article!!!

We are certainly on the same page here. Thanks for the positive response, great to know that people care so much about our babies, the importance of parents leading by example, and freedom of choice. Hope you are well.
