Surrender Your Children to TV?
Research conducted by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey concluded that approximately one-third of American children between the ages of 12 and 19 are not physically fit. This directly correlates to the obesity epidemic, the increasing number of youthful diabetes patients, and results in several adverse health conditions.
Typically, unhealthy children lead to unhealthy adults. As parents, we look for ways to intervene and technology always comes up with an easy solution for us. What is their answer on how to increase a child's activity? Simply give your television more control over your child.
This shoe: "Square-eyes" will tally up your child's daily steps and correlate that to earned TV time. The TV will shut off when the alloted TV viewing time is used up, so you simply walk and it will allow for more TV time.
Theoretically, it would make sense that by giving TV the responsibility of exercising your child, you are giving TV control of your child. TV and commercial ads will then have an overwhelming impact on the child's life and potentially become their number one source of information on everything from cereal to prescription drugs.
I exercise creating strong individuals through enforcing self-responsibility. The new exercise recommendation for children may be increasing from 60 min. to 90 min. each day.
