Children's Abdominal Obesity Increases at an Alarming Rate

Between 1988 and 2004 abdominal obesity increased in boys by 65% and almost 70% in girls.  Abdominal obesity is known to be a better predictor of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes than the more common Body Mass Index (BMI).

"Those increases only grow more alarming as you tease out specific age groups over longer periods of time," Cook said.  "For example, between 1988-1994 data and the 1999-2004 data, the largest relative increase in the prevalence of abdominal obesity occurred among 2- to 5-year old boys -- 84 percent -- 18- to 19-year-old girls -- 126 percent."

   "OUCH!"

Obviously, something needs to be done.  Adults must lead by example, set a healthy tone in your household by purchasing a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables.  Keep these tasty treats out on counters for easy access.  Encourage their consumption by placing them in fun, colorful bowls.  Limit junk food purchases and store in cabinets: out-of-sight, out-of-mind.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle by limiting sedentary activities, such as TV and computer time, and encourage more playtime
