Nike Running Shoes Act as Tracking Devices

The Nike+iPod Sport Kit's intended use is for its user to track their distance, speed, and calories burned during their workouts. Unfortunately, the $29 item can easily be used as a tracking device by others (such as stalkers and thieves), raising concerns of privacy and safety.
The item consist of two parts, a sensor in the shoe that acts much like a pedometer and a receiver that fits into an iPod Nano that stores information beamed from the sensor. But, this sensor beams the information to any compatible receiver up to 60 feet away.
Since most people do not bother to turn the device off upon the completion of a workout, the user could potentially be putting him/herself in harms way by simply carrying it around in their gym bag.
There have been more than 450,000 sold since its debut in August. If you have one (or know someone who does) be sure to turn it off upon completion of your workouts.
As I always say: "safety first."
