Pumped - Up Pastries
Is it never enough? First we have coffee, tea, soda, and energy drinks (such as Red Bull) to supply our caffeine cravings. Now we have caffeine enhanced foods, namely "Buzz Donuts" and "Buzzed Bagels," being created for mass consumption.
Scientist and café owner, Dr. Robert Bohannon discovered a way to add caffeine to baked goods without any bitter taste or altered texture. He can easily add 100 milligrams of caffeine to each pastry, the equivalent of a cup of coffee.
"I see nothing positive from this," said Barry Popkin, a nutrition scientist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "In many ways we're creating a super caffeine generation. They're undersleeping, they consume a lot of caffeine to stay awake but they don't understand there are health effects."
"It's like getting a candy bar and putting Vitamin C in it, saying you're getting your Vitamin C from this candy bar."
Children and pregnant women could also be hurt by more access to caffeine, especially if it's added to unhealthy foods, Popkin said.Mr. Bohannon is currently seeking patents and getting feedback from Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc., Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks Corp.
Be careful folks, excessive caffeine intake can lead to fast heart rate, excessive urination, nausea and vomiting, restlessness, anxiety, depression, tremors, and difficulty sleeping. There is also concern that it can lead to fibrocystic breast disease, cardiovascular disease, birth defects, and abnormal reproductive function.
As I see it, everything in moderation. I enjoy my eye-opening cup of joe with 1/2 scoop chocolate whey protein and a dash of sweetener, it's frothy and delicious.
