Each of these diet pills includes active ingredients that are not listed on the labels. Different products contained different substances, such as:

  • Sibutramine, marketed in the United States as the anti-obesity drug Meridia and classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance
  • Rimonabant, sold overseas as the weight-loss drug Acomplia (among other names) and not approved for use in the United States
  • Phenytoin, an anti-seizure medication
  • Phenophthalein, used in chemical experiments as a marker for acid or basic solutions, it was once used as a laxative but is carcinogenic
