Fatter Than Your Mother; A "Growing" Trend

Overweight mothers give birth to offspring who become even heavier, resulting in amplification of obesity across generations. Not only that, but obese mothers take the risk of giving birth to babies with life threatening birth defects as well.
About one-third of U.S. women of reproductive age are obese, according to recent data. Obesity during pregnancy raises the risk of numerous problems for the mother, such as hypertension and diabetes, and for the baby, such as preterm birth. It also clearly increases the chances that the baby will have a birth defect...

...babies of obese women had twice the risk of having a neural tube defect. These babies also had an elevated risk of a heart defect, cleft palate or cleft lip, anorectal atresia (an abnormality of the anus or rectum), hydrocephaly (an enlargement of the ventricles of the brain due to fluid) and limb reduction defects...

...Babies born to obese mothers are one-third more likely to have a significant birth defect such as spina bifida, heart defects and omphalocele (a condition in which the intestines or other abdominal organs protrude from the belly button), according to that study.

Birth defects are responsible for about 20% of all infant deaths in the United States.

Research shows not only that "you are what you eat," but that a mother's diet can alter a baby's genes as well.

The desire to have a healthy baby can be very motivating. Why not get in shape now, stay in shape while you are pregnant, and enjoy a healthy happy life with your baby?
